FIRE NAME - TRICK

LOCATION - WILLIAMS, ARIZONA

DATES - AUGUST 26TH - SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2002

CREW - John Roads (SRBE), Jesse Grassman (FFT2/SRBET), Kenny Estelle (FFT2)

The Trick fire started from lightning on the Kiabab National Forest south of Williams, Arizona. The fire was burning in Tule` Canyon. The canyon is a very steep, rugged canyon that is mostly wilderness. The canyon drains into Sycamore Canyon and runs down to the Sedona/Red Rocks area. Above Tule` Canyon is a flat plateau. The fire was burning upwards, trying to burn out of the canyon top.  The fire eventually burned 5550 acres. Paul Broyles Type 2 team from Idaho was assigned as IC.

Caminos 1 was assigned to the area of Pocket Point, assisting hand crews with water supply. During the first two days, fire intensity was high as the fire attempted to escape the canyon. No compressed air foam was used during this assignment.

The first two photos show Caminos 1 on the 1st day of this job. The engine was assigned to Pocket Point. The fire was making simultaneous runs up both sides of the point. This view is looking south. Note the eerie red tint. This is from the sun shining through the smoke cloud to the north in the next photo.
Same location, same time. Looking north. This area did eventually burn over as the fire came out of Tule` Canyon.
Crews move towards the safety zone as the fire attempts to escape the canyon.
The next six pictures show the fire making an up hill run from the canyon.

Note the fire ball appearing over the trees.

Jesse waits for the flame lengths to cool to began suppression efforts.
This photo shows the burn over of the area where the engine was positioned in the first two photos (above)
This photo was taken several days later, and just south of Pocket Point. Fire burned through both sides of the canyon.
