CREW - John Roads (SRBE), Jesse Grassman (FFT2/SRBET), Kenny Estelle (FFT2)
The Battle Creek Forest Fire started from lightning on the Black Hills National Forest south of Rapid City, South Dakota, near Mount Rushmore. The fire eventually burned 11,000 acres and threatened hundreds of structures. Three homes and a garage did burn. Joe Wood's Type 1 team was assigned as IC.
Caminos 1 joined 183 other engines assigned to the area for structure protection. Caminos 1 worked two night shifts, the first assisting in burn out control, the second on patrol. Only 1 gallon of compressed air foam (CAF) was used during this assignment, for burn out control.
Due to being assigned night operations, only 3 photos are available for this assignment.

This is a burn out operation just behind homes. The CAF unit was utilized to protect the structures and keep the burn out headed towards the main, out of control fire. |

The Battle Creek fire was only a few miles from Mt. Rushmore. Of course we stopped for a visit on the way home. |

Our visit at Mt. Rushmore was shared by a heavy hail storm. The storm left a rainbow over the engine. This shot is looking northeast from the parking lot. The rainbow is over Keystone, SD, in the canyon below. |
